Hypothyroidism and Allergies

imagesEvery day people with thyroid problems whether they have an underactive thyroid or an overactive thyroid, come to this site looking for answers and solutions.   We now know that there is a strong connection between hypothyroidism and allergies.

An underactive thyroid may be the result of eating  foods containing gluten, insulin resistance, GI infections, Estrogen Dominance, Heavy Metal Toxicity, Iodine Excess and VCR Polymorphism. Common complaints are fatigue, depression and an inability to lose weight. It is probable that your thyroid cells are being destroyed by autoantibodies which cause an elevation in thyroid TSH levels.

What you might not realize is what preceded your hypo thyroid condition. Perhaps your body has been tricked into believing that your thyroid gland is foreign tissue.  Although this isn’t true, this is exactly what is happening in a person with an autoimmune thyroid condition.

Learning Center: When an antigen-allergen comes from the body’s own thyroid gland it is referred to as an autoantigen, which means we are allergic to ourselves. The antibody that attacks the thyroid gland is referred to as an autoantibody. This means we produce autoantibodies against ourselves. When a disease is characterized by the production of autoantibodies, it is called an autoimmune disease.

There are a lot of “A” words in this paragraph and even I find myself getting confused. Let’s go over it once more. When we are having an allergic response our body sees a foreign substance as an allergen aka antigen. In this case your body has incorrectly labeled your thyroid gland as a foreign substance and your body’s response is to produce autoantibodies that attack it.   The DNA Allergy Relief System reprograms your DNA to prevent the body from producing these autoantibodies.

AutoImmune Risk Survey

Many people with Hypothyroidism have one or more of the following three types of anemia.

  1. Pernicious anemia or B-Vitamin anemia:  You are unable to absorb or assimilate B Vitamins, especially B6,B12 and folic acid.
  2. Iron deficiency anemia:  You are allergic to iron and/or ferritin.
  3. Autoimmune anemia:  Highly likely if you already have an autoimmune disorder

Hypothyroidism is associated with high antigenic loads such as gluten (already mentionded), iodine, bacterial infections and the heavy metals they bind to. Remember antigen = allergen. Thus it’s likely that you have an allergy to one or all of these substances. Use the DNA Allergy Relief Kit to treat these anemias

Some people have various mold/fungus in their bodies. The immune system will try to tag the mold and can even end up attacking  organs  like the thyroid or ovaries.

The typical medical response to hypothyroidism is iodine supplementation.  This treatment may be inadequate especially if, after taking iodine, you experience anxiety, nervousness, palpitations or insomnia. These are signs that you may be  having an ALLERGIC reaction to the iodine.  In this case,  the iodine is possibly making things worse and  may even cause you to lose even more thyroid tissue.

The other approach is prescription medications like Synthroid or Armour Thyroid which can often result in the patient not experiencing any improvement.  The reason for this is that the iodothyronin deiodinase enzymes (D1, D2, and D3) may not functioning properly.

A person with Hypothyroidism can be either TH-1 or TH-2 dominant. The best way to find this out is to have your doctor run a panel for this.

  • People who are TH-2 dominant will get worse when they use TH-2 stimulators like caffeine, licorice or green tea. People who are TH-1 dominant will feel better using these substances and worse when they take TH-1 stimulators like astragulus, echinacea or mushrooms.

Did you know that there is a strong correlation between an autoimmune thyroiditis imbalance and a gluten sensitivity or Celiac disease aka gastrointestinal (GI) inflammation?

This 2007 headline endorses my point:

Hidden Food Allergies…Indigestion, Inflammation and Auto Immune Disease

Here’s some things you can start doing today!

1. Think about starting to eliminating  GRAINS/GLUTEN ( this includes corn) from your diet.  This may help you get some energy back and possibly lose some weight.  You’re likely to feel so good you just might want stay gluten-free.  An allergy to GLUTEN will usually produce bloating and fatigue after consuming bread and other wheat/grain products.

2.  People with hypothyroidism are likely to be Vitamin D deficient and may require  mega doses of Vitamin D.  Other things that deplete Vitamin D are stress, obesity and GI inflammation.

Vitamin D is misnamed.  It is actually a hormone which supports T-regulatory cell function. That means it helps fight allergies. In order to assimilate Vitamin D most effectively it is best taken with Vitamin E, EPA/DHA, glutathione and SOD. Vitamin D and Glutathione are both important immune modulators.

Try Biotics emulsified Vitamin D as it contains 2,000 IU’s per drop

  1. Where do you get your information? Can you refer me to any published articles in peer reviewed journals to support your recommendations? What does thyroid autoimmune disease have to do with gluten sensitivity? How do you determine if someone is TH1 or TH2 dominant?
I would caution anyone to consult with their medical doctor before following any of these recommendations. Hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is a serious problem and need to be treated and monitored appropriately.

  2. Dr. Edwards replies to Dr. De Asis who rightly asks where I got my information?

The bulk of it came from Datis Kharrazian D.C., M.S., F.A.A.C.P, D.A.C.B.N, D.I.B.A.K, C.N.S., C.C.N, C.S.C.S., C.C.S.P. Dr. Kharrazian teaches seminars on functional endocrinology and has a large, thriving private practice in San Diego, CA. For peer reviewed journals anyone can simply go to http://www.pubmed.gov and search = Thyroid gluten, and numerous articles showing the connection between gluten, celiac and thyroid problems are apparent. A further PubMed search = gluten autoimmune disease is likewise revealing. I’m surprised Dr. De Asis didn’t take the time to do this himself before writing his post. I have added just a few of the hundreds of articles pertaining to this issue for what it’s worth.

With all the research that’s been done heart disease is still the number one killer in the United States (not other countries), Cancer still runs rampant and according to the NIH the number of people with Diabetes will double in the next 20 years.

It’s also surprising that Dr. De Asis seems unaware of the numerous labs that run Th-1 and Th-2 panels. All one has to do to find them is Google – Th-1 Th-2 Panel. Personally I use Immunosciences lab.

Lastly I’d like to point on that I am a Doctor and I am not in any way down playing the seriousness of a person with the condition hypothyroidism or the disease called Hashimoto’s. I have looked at Dr. De Asis’s website and it appears that he is a traditional Doctor who believes that drugs, radiation and surgery are the answer. My point is they are one answer. There are many other answers.

Other cultures have, throughout the ages, treated these conditions with alternative means. Western medical practices are not the be all nor end all when it comes to health care. The dismal status of American health is a testimony to this. There are many brilliant Doctors from varing disciplines who are fully capable of treating endocrine dysfunctions, autoimmune disease and a variety of other health care issues. Medical Doctors can be brilliant too. Unfortunately, they often times rely far to much on drugs and surgery and have an extremely limited knowledge or experience with diet and nutrition.

  3. Dr. De Asis – Thank you so much for your comments. I believe we agree, as you note above, that celiac disease and Hashimoto’s can occur together in the same client. In clinical practice people with celiac disease and a concurrent thyroid condition show improvement in their overall symptomatology when placed on a gluten-free diet. I have not in away way stated a causal relationship, I clearly indicated that there is a “strong correlation” between celiac disease and a thyroid condition. Please do not put words in my mouth.

I also do not see where I’ve recommended avoiding gluten (or anything else) as a CURE for thyroid autoimmune disease, this would be silly. No one is going to CURE a thyroid condition by simply not eating gluten and taking some supplements. And no one is going to cure their thyroid autoimmune disease by taking Synthroid or Armour either – they might manage their symptoms, but they will not be cured.

My recommendations are meant to be supportive to care that a client might already be receiving or considering. Certainly there is more good to be gained than harm done if these clients avoided gluten. The fact is that every single client of mine who has stopped eating wheat has lost weight and feels better no matter what their health status. My position is that wheat/gluten is not good for anyone! It is an addictive substance that shortens ones lifespan. That’s my bias, my opinion and there are many others who support this bias and opinion — some of whom are medical doctors.

Certainly there are advantages to supplementing with Vitamin D, especially during the Fall and Winter months. And as Vitamin D absorbs better when taken with synergistic nutrients such as EPA/DHA, Glutathione, Vitamin E and SOD all of which are highly beneficial to our overall health.

Please do not mislead people into thinking that either a medical doctor or science has all the right answers. This is silly too. There are far to many people who are dead because they relied on science rather than common sense and vice versa.
As for whether or not my recommendations are supported by science I leave that to the readers to decide. I’m going to go out on a limb here and suggest that there are far more people who are more interested in their astrology reading than whether on not there is a scientific study to support anyones findings or recommendations.

All autoimmune conditions are serious as those who suffer from them can attest. When the body no longer differentiates self from non-self and sees what is obviously abnormal as normal that is serious. And I couldn’t agree with you more that readers should “have all resources available to them” which is exactly the service that I’m putting forth here.

I just stumbled across these posting. Gee, maybe a gluten-free diet is a cure afterall at least according to these medical doctors.

Organ-Specific Autoantibodies Linked to Dietary Gluten in Celiac Disease Patients
WESTPORT, Sep 07 (Reuters Health) – Patients with celiac disease have high levels of diabetes- and thyroid-related autoantibodies that “disappear” when the patients are placed on a gluten-free diet.
The finding confirms the high prevalence of organ-specific autoantibodies in patients with celiac disease, and supports the theory that these antibodies are gluten-dependent, Dr. Alessandro Ventura, of the Universita di Trieste, Italy, and colleagues say in the August issue of the Journal of Pediatrics.

From ABOUT: Thyroid Disease comes — According to research reported on in the medical journal Digestive Diseases and Sciences, a significant number of patients with autoimmune thyroid disease also have celiac disease . . . “By following these subjects longitudinally, it has been seen that not only do the anti-gliadin antibodies and anti-endomysium antibodies disappear after 3 to 6 months of a gluten-free diet, but so do the organ-specific autoantibodies.”(Digestive Diseases and Sciences, February 2000;45:403-406.)

  4. The resources I used “Clinical Strategies to Overcome Thyroid Disease and Celiac Disease came from research articles published on PUBMED. Some of these are shown at the end of the article. Go to the PUBMED site and do a few searches such as Thyroid Gluten or Celiac Gluten and see for yourself.

  5. Great post! Just wanted to let you know you have a new subscriber- me!

  6. your articles have been so useful. I have an under active thyroid and i have a dreadful reaction to gluten. I am agoraphobic and have frequent panic attacks. I have been tested for celiacs and that was negative. I am now producing signs of auto immune disorder type symptoms. I fall asleep for hours at a time. This is ruling my life at the moment. I have a terrible itch at night and so many other things that make me so fed up. I cant keep on like this. I keep going to the doctors and they say its because I have slow bowels. If you have any suggestions on how I can get this across to my g.p. I don’t feel I can go on much more. I can’t even walk round the block with my dogs without needing a sleep. The iron tablets that I have been given caused me to have continuous anxiety attacks so i don’t take them anymore. I am so pleased to read your information explaining that all these things are connected.

  8. Thanks for the post! I was diagnosed today with Hashimoto’s Disease and a vitamin d deficiency. I’m being tested for Celiac Disease and waiting for resulst. I have had chronic low grade fevers every day from 10 AM – 4 PM, which my doctor’s cannot explain. Do you have any thoughts on what could be causing a fever? I have all the other symptoms: chronic fatigue, chills, general ache, joint pain (hips).
I started Levoxyl 5 days ago and have seen absolutely no improvement.
    Any thoughts are welcomed.
